Back in Mike's Master Gardening days at the University of Minnesota, he received a colony of bees as a gift from his family. What started out as an addition to the garden for pollination became a passion in no time. Now, 10 years down the line, Bone Lake Meadows has hives along the St. Croix River Valley, supplying local communities with truly pure honey from their native land.
In 2009, Mike crossed paths with a curiously stubborn newbee by the name of Kelsey. Combining their knowledge, ideals, and humor they bridged the generational gap with the common goal of replacing many of the unsustainable practices used in beekeeping today. Nature evolves, so must beekeepers. Our course of action is to promote the natural selection process of having stronger, healthier bees even against the onslaught of mites and diseases.
We practice chemical-free beekeeping. If it shouldn't go in our body, why put it in a hive? As beekeepers it's our job to set up our bees to succeed. We do this by placing our bees on organically farmed land, orchard, garden plots and CSA farms. We have strict criteria for where we place our hives, choosing to surround our bees with the best possible food source. This practice not only produces the purest honey, but also helps the bees survive and actually thrive - a true feat , considering these appalling agricultural times.
All of our honey is completely raw and unadulterated. It is never heated and only filtered one time to remove large wax chunks. We aren't just saying that, we really mean it and you can both taste and see the difference. Unlike most beekeepers, we harvest regularly to get a variety of honeys throughout the season. After harvesting, we use our own beeswax to make hand-poured candles and natural cosmetics.
In addition to raising healthy bees to strengthen the declining honeybee population, Bone Lake Meadows donates 3% of all profits to organizations that support honeybees.
We've got a lot of heart here at Bone Lake Meadows and truly believe it shows in our products. Stop by one of our markets and meet your friendly neighborhood beekeepers!
